EN 1984 gate valves: buyer specification guide

An EN 1984 reference identifies a design framework, while the project datasheet completes the valve definition. Service conditions, material grade, end connection, construction, operator and test acceptance still need explicit values.

Define service and construction

State fluid, design and operating pressure and temperature, DN, PN, flow direction, installation position and cycle frequency. Identify wedge arrangement, stem type and body-bonnet joint.

Gate valves are normally used for isolation. If throttling is expected, disclose the operating profile and evaluate a valve intended for control duty.

Confirm dimensions and ratings

Name end-connection and face-to-face standards with editions. Compare flange geometry, bore and actuator envelope with the piping and site.

Verify the pressure-temperature rating for the exact body material and temperature. Include system test and transient conditions.

Specify materials and sealing

List body, bonnet, wedge, seats, stem, bolting, packing and gasket materials. Define low-temperature impact, corrosion or hardfacing requirements where applicable.

State closure leakage criterion and flow directions to be tested. Packing emissions qualification is a separate requirement when needed.

Control operation and records

Provide handwheel, gearbox or actuator requirements, maximum differential pressure, travel time and control interfaces. Check operating thrust against stem limits.

Require approved drawings, material certificates, traceability, shell and seat tests, functional test and marking review before release.
