PED and CE marking for industrial valves supplied to Europe

A CE logo on a brochure does not answer whether a specific industrial valve execution complies with the European Pressure Equipment Directive. Buyers and suppliers need to assess the actual equipment, design conditions, fluid and contractual scope. The result must be supported by the correct conformity route and technical file.

Identify the supplied pressure equipment

Start by defining what is placed on the market: an individual valve, a pressure accessory, an assembly or a component incorporated into equipment by another economic operator. Contract terminology and engineering terminology must describe the same supply boundary.

Record maximum allowable pressure, nominal size, fluid, temperature and intended service. Product naming alone does not determine the route. The responsible party should document the classification decision for the exact supplied configuration.

Determine PED scope and classification

Directive 2014/68/EU establishes essential safety requirements and conformity procedures for pressure equipment within its scope. Classification uses the equipment type, fluid group and pressure or size parameters. Some equipment may fall under sound engineering practice rather than a numbered category.

Do not copy a category from a similar valve or old project. The design basis and fluid data may differ. The buyer should require the supplier to state the applied classification logic and identify any exclusions or boundary assumptions.

Agree the conformity-assessment route

The applicable module or module combination depends on the category and selected compliance route. Higher-risk routes can require notified-body involvement. The purchase order should identify who selects and contracts the notified body, who maintains the technical file and who signs the declaration.

A general quality-system certificate does not replace product conformity assessment. Likewise, a pressure-test report confirms a test result but does not cover design review, materials, permanent joining, marking and all essential safety requirements.

Build the technical documentation around the valve

The technical file normally needs a clear design description, calculations or design evidence, drawings, material controls, manufacturing procedures, inspection results, pressure-test evidence, risk assessment, applied standards and marking information. Exact content depends on the route.

Traceability should connect body, bonnet and pressure-retaining materials to certificates and manufacturing records. Changes after approval must be controlled so the delivered valve still corresponds to the assessed configuration.

Use harmonised standards carefully

A harmonised standard can provide a presumption of conformity for requirements it covers when correctly applied and cited. It does not remove the need to assess requirements outside its scope. Confirm the edition and legal status relevant to the project date.

When the project combines EN, ISO, API or customer specifications, prepare a compliance matrix. Resolve conflicts through the contractual hierarchy and document any alternative technical solution with supporting engineering evidence.

Verify marking and final declarations at release

Before shipment, compare the nameplate, declaration, approved drawing and final manufacturing records. Valve identification, pressure data, material, notified-body number where applicable and traceability references must be consistent with the assessed product.

The final review should also confirm instructions, safety information and required language. Buyers should retain the agreed documentation for the project record and avoid treating a sample certificate as evidence for a different serial or batch.
