EN 558 vs ASME B16.10 valve face-to-face dimensions
A replacement valve can have the right size, pressure class and flanges but still fail to fit the available spool gap. EN 558 and ASME B16.10 organise valve face-to-face dimensions differently, so engineering must compare the exact design, series and drawing before purchase.

Face-to-face is a controlled installation dimension
For flanged valves, face-to-face is measured between defined end faces. For butt-welding or other ends, end-to-end rules may apply. The measurement basis must match the end connection and standard terminology used in the project.
Do not infer the dimension from DN and PN or from a photograph. Request the standard series and a certified dimension drawing for the exact model, size and pressure designation.
Series and valve pattern matter
Standards can include multiple dimensional series for the same nominal size. Short, basic and long patterns may be associated with different valve types or market practice. Two manufacturers can both cite EN 558 while offering different series.
ASME B16.10 also covers defined valve types and ratings. Confirm whether the proposed construction falls within the referenced table and whether seats, liners or end preparations change the effective installation dimension.
Compare more than the spool gap
Overall height, stem travel, gearbox envelope, actuator orientation and bonnet-removal clearance determine whether the valve can be operated and maintained. A matching face-to-face dimension does not guarantee that the handwheel clears a wall or that internal parts can be removed.
For check valves and butterfly valves, verify installation orientation and internal disc or hinge movement. Adjacent reducers, strainers and pipe fittings may affect performance even when the bolted joint fits.
Plan brownfield measurement and tolerances
Measure the existing gap at several points, flange parallelism, bolt alignment and pipe restraint. Record whether the line can be moved during installation. Old drawings may not reflect field modifications or gasket compression.
Include permitted manufacturing tolerance and gasket thickness in the installation review. For large valves, agree jacking, support and lifting arrangements before shutdown.
Avoid unapproved filler pieces and forced fit-up
Pulling pipework into place with flange bolts can introduce harmful loads into the valve body and connected equipment. Informal spacers or thick gasket stacks can reduce joint reliability and violate the piping specification.
If dimensions differ, engineer a replacement spool or rated adapter with suitable materials, welding procedures, examination and pressure test. Treat the change as part of the piping system, not as an installation improvisation.
Freeze dimensions in the approved drawing
The final purchase drawing should show face-to-face or end-to-end dimension, end connections, total envelope, centre of gravity, mass and maintenance clearances. The purchaser should mark these dimensions as approval-critical.
At receipt, dimensional inspection should compare the valve with that approved drawing before the installation window. Early verification is cheaper than discovering a mismatch during a planned shutdown.
