ISO 12944 C5 valve coating for corrosive sites

A C5 label describes environmental corrosivity, not a complete paint specification. Valve coating performance depends on substrate preparation, compatible layers, total dry-film thickness, edge treatment, inspection and protection during shipment.

Classify the actual exposure

Document marine or industrial atmosphere, humidity, salt, chemicals, UV, temperature and indoor or outdoor installation. State the intended durability range and maintenance access.

Internal wetted coating requires a separate immersion and fluid-compatibility assessment. External C5 classification does not qualify a lining for process exposure.

Write the coating system

Identify substrate, surface preparation, cleanliness, profile, stripe coats, primer, intermediate and topcoat, nominal DFT and permitted ranges. Address machined surfaces, flange faces, fasteners and actuator interfaces.

Confirm compatibility with operating temperature and any insulation. Use a controlled repair system for damaged areas.

Define inspection and acceptance

Record ambient conditions, surface cleanliness, profile, wet and dry film thickness, cure, adhesion where specified and holiday testing for linings. Instruments need suitable range and calibration.

Inspection points should appear in the ITP. Reports must identify valve tags, coating batch and repaired areas.

Protect the coating through logistics

Allow full cure before packing. Use soft supports, capped openings, lifting points and separators that avoid coating damage.

Inspect at receipt and repair transport damage under the approved procedure before outdoor storage or installation.
