API 598 vs ISO 5208 vs EN 12266-1 for industrial valve testing
Naming a test standard is not a complete purchase requirement. The purchaser must connect the document and edition to the valve type, test pressure, duration, medium, orientation and permitted leakage. This guide explains how to replace the ambiguous phrase “hydrotested to an international standard” with an auditable requirement.

The standards address related but not identical scopes
The three routes are used to demonstrate the integrity of the pressure boundary and the closure performance of metallic valves. A specification normally separates the shell test from seat or closure tests, but the mandatory operations depend on the valve type and governing product standard.
A testing standard does not replace a design or product standard. ISO 5208 explicitly states that it is intended to work with the relevant product standard and that differing product-standard requirements take precedence. Contract documents should establish the hierarchy rather than leave it to interpretation after manufacture.
A gauge pressure alone does not make results equivalent
Two reports showing the same pressure may represent different acceptance scopes. Test medium, holding time, valve orientation, direction of applied pressure, visible versus measured leakage and the need for high- or low-pressure closure tests can differ.
Seat leakage needs special care for resilient and metal-seated valves. Do not use conversational “zero leakage” as a substitute for a stated rate or class. Confirm that the selected criterion applies to the valve design, nominal size and test method.
Choose the route from the specification, not the factory location
API 598 is frequently paired with API and ASME product standards and oil-and-gas owner specifications. ISO 5208 provides an international pressure-testing framework for metallic valves. EN 12266-1 provides the European production-testing route for metallic industrial valves.
The contract, piping class, product standard, end-user specification and regulatory context should drive the choice. Before purchase, the manufacturer should state the document edition, applicable tests, acceptance level and any deviation in a compliance matrix.
Make the test report traceable
The record should identify the valve or batch, tag or serial link, standard and edition, test medium, applied pressure, hold time, relevant temperature, orientation, acceptance criterion and actual result. A witness record should identify the attending parties and ITP point status.
Agree gauge range, accuracy and calibration status, test-rig safety, photographs or video, report language and inclusion in the manufacturing record book. A generic certificate that cannot be linked to the supplied item is not a substitute for traceable acceptance evidence.
