Industrial valve quality control: from casting to pressure test
A final hydrostatic test is essential, but it cannot correct the wrong alloy, a hidden casting discontinuity or poor seat geometry. Reliability is built through planned inspection points and traceable records from receipt to release.

Incoming control establishes identity
Material and component batches should be identified before production. Grade, heat number, certificate and acceptance status must remain linked to the pressure-containing body and critical parts after machining.
Positive material identification, spectrometry or additional verification may be required by the inspection and test plan or project risk. The method and acceptance criteria should be agreed before results are known.
Casting inspection follows the risk
Surface quality is assessed after cleaning, but visual inspection cannot replace methods intended for surface-breaking or volumetric discontinuities. VT, PT/MT, UT or RT are selected by the governing standard, critical zone and contract.
Casting repair requires an approved procedure, mapped indication, qualified welding, heat treatment where applicable and repeat examination. Every repair should remain traceable in the manufacturing record.
Machining and assembly create sealing geometry
Dimensional inspection covers fits, alignment, seat geometry, surface finish, threads and flange details. Measuring equipment must have valid calibration status and suitable resolution.
Before assembly, verify cleanliness, trim identity, component orientation, tightening torque and sealing materials. Process controls should prevent errors before pressure testing rather than relying on rework after leakage.
Pressure testing must produce evidence
The shell test evaluates the pressure boundary; the seat test evaluates closure performance. Pressure, holding time, medium, orientation and leakage criterion follow the applicable standard and purchase specification.
The final manufacturing record book should connect the item identity with material records, NDT, dimensional results, assembly checks and test reports. A traceable record is stronger evidence than an isolated photograph of a pressure gauge.
