CF8M vs CF3M stainless steel valves: what changes?
CF8M and CF3M are molybdenum-bearing cast austenitic stainless grades. Their similar names hide a meaningful difference in carbon control. The correct choice depends on fabrication, corrosion mechanism, heat treatment and the project material specification.

Understand the grade distinction
CF3M is the lower-carbon counterpart commonly compared with CF8M. Lower carbon can reduce sensitisation risk in relevant welded or thermally exposed conditions, but grade name alone does not guarantee corrosion performance.
Verify chemistry, solution heat treatment and mechanical properties on the material certificate. Confirm that the casting standard and specified grade match the approved bill of materials.
Define the actual corrosion environment
Record chlorides, pH, oxidising species, temperature, solids, cleaning chemicals and stagnation. Stainless performance changes sharply with crevices, deposits, weld condition and temperature.
For seawater, brine or aggressive chemical service, an austenitic cast stainless grade may still be unsuitable. A corrosion or materials engineer should evaluate the full exposure and required design life.
Check welding and repair history
Casting repair and pressure-boundary welding require approved procedures, qualified personnel and controlled heat input. Specify repair limits, NDE and any post-repair heat-treatment requirements.
The final dossier should identify approved repairs and examination results. An acceptable chemistry certificate cannot replace repair traceability.
Match trim and sealing materials
Review stem, seats, closure member, hardfacing, bolting, packing and gasket materials. Galling, crevice corrosion and galvanic effects can arise even when the body grade is acceptable.
Specify cleanliness and contamination controls when stainless parts are machined, assembled, tested and packed alongside carbon steel production.
Compare offers against one material baseline
Require suppliers to return the exact grade, standard and deviations in the datasheet. Avoid accepting descriptions such as 316 stainless without the casting designation and certificate requirements.
Use a traceability matrix from valve serial number to body and bonnet heat. Add PMI when justified by project risk, while retaining original certificate control.
