Ductile iron vs cast iron valves: engineering differences

Ductile iron and grey cast iron are separate material families. They can appear in similar waterworks valve designs, but their strength, ductility and response to impact differ. Selection must follow the governing valve standard and declared pressure-temperature limits.

Compare mechanical behaviour

Ductile iron obtains improved ductility through controlled graphite form and processing. Grey cast iron is more brittle under tensile, impact and bending loads. These differences affect handling, piping loads and allowable design scope.

Review the exact grade and mechanical properties instead of relying on the words cast iron. The material certificate and product standard should identify the accepted designation.

Use declared ratings and temperature limits

Confirm pressure rating, maximum and minimum temperature, valve size and permitted service from the applicable design standard. Do not transfer a rating from one material or valve family to another.

Water hammer, pump trips, freezing and external piping loads belong in the system assessment. A nominal PN value does not describe every transient case.

Control flange and installation loads

Flat-face and raised-face combinations, gasket selection, bolt tightening and pipe misalignment can create concentrated loads. Follow the valve and flange instructions for the actual material and connection.

Support heavy piping and actuators independently where required. Never use flange bolts to pull misaligned pipework into position.

Treat coating as part of the water-service design

Specify internal and external coating, surface preparation, thickness, holiday testing and repair. Check potable-water approvals when the service requires them.

Protect sealing surfaces, fasteners and stem penetrations. Transport damage and unsealed flange openings can compromise a good factory coating before commissioning.

Select by service, not price alone

Compare material, rating, valve design, seat system, coating, test standard and documentation. A lower unit price can carry higher installation or replacement risk if the material envelope is unclear.

Request shell and seat test records linked to the supplied batch. Record approved substitutions before production.
