Rising stem vs non-rising stem gate valves
Stem arrangement changes installation height, position indication and maintenance access. It does not replace the need to define pressure, temperature, fluid, seat design and operating frequency. Choose the arrangement around the site and service.

How the two arrangements move
In a rising-stem design, the stem visibly moves as the gate travels. This provides direct position indication but requires vertical clearance. In a non-rising-stem design, stem motion is contained within the valve envelope.
Confirm the specific design drawing because stem nut location and internal details vary. The operator and gearbox arrangement also affects access.
Check available space and access
Measure overhead clearance for full travel, actuator removal and packing maintenance. Buried, chamber or low-ceiling installations can favour a compact non-rising arrangement.
Compact height should not create inaccessible lubrication or stem-nut service. Include safe access for operation and replacement.
Consider fluid exposure and corrosion
A non-rising stem mechanism can be exposed to the process fluid in some designs. Assess corrosion, deposits, solids and lubrication compatibility. Rising stems expose an external stem length that also needs protection.
Specify stem and stem-nut materials, protective covers and environmental coating. Keep dirt away from threads and packing areas during storage.
Define position indication and automation
If remote indication is required, state open and closed switches, local indicator and control-system interface. Visual stem position may support field checks but does not provide an electrical signal.
Actuator sizing must use thrust and torque data for maximum differential pressure, seating load and service factors.
Choose around life-cycle maintenance
Review packing adjustment, stem lubrication, gate and seat access, buried extensions and spare parts. Installation orientation should follow manufacturer limits.
Include functional travel and closure testing in commissioning. Record travel stops and operating turns for future maintenance.
