Metal-seated vs soft-seated valves: how to choose

Seat material affects shutoff, operating torque, temperature range and resistance to wear. A tight leakage class on a datasheet is meaningful only when the seat design matches the fluid, differential pressure, cycling and test method.

Start with service conditions and leakage target

State fluid, solids, design temperature, differential pressure, cycle frequency and required test standard. Separate factory acceptance leakage from expected in-service performance.

Soft seats often provide very tight shutoff in compatible clean service. Metal seats can tolerate higher temperature or abrasive conditions, but their permitted leakage and required contact load depend on design.

Evaluate soft-seat compatibility

Check elastomer or polymer type against temperature, chemicals, swelling, decompression, radiation and cleaning exposure. A family name such as PTFE or EPDM is incomplete without grade and limits.

Consider trapped pressure, extrusion gaps and cold flow. The offered seat should be qualified for the exact pressure and temperature combination.

Evaluate metal-seat wear and sealing

Metal seats rely on geometry, finish, contact stress and material pairing. Hardfacing may improve erosion or galling resistance, but process compatibility and repair method still need review.

For dirty service, examine particle size, hardness, concentration and flow velocity. No seat survives unlimited throttling or abrasive flow in the wrong operating position.

Account for torque and actuation

Seat friction and required contact load influence operating torque. Use break, run and end torque at the maximum differential pressure, with suitable service and aging factors.

Size actuators against the final seat and packing configuration. A change from soft to metal seats can alter actuator requirements and closing speed.

Specify tests and maintainability

Name shell and closure test standard, pressure, medium, duration and acceptance criterion. Add fire-safe or fugitive-emission qualification as separate requirements where relevant.

Define replaceable seat parts, lapping or repair process, recommended spares and commissioning checks. Preserve seats from dirt and transport damage.
