Resilient-seated vs metal-seated gate valves

Resilient and metal seated gate valves solve different isolation duties. Water quality, solids, temperature, cycling and required shutoff should drive the decision. The seat name alone does not establish suitability.

Where resilient seating works well

A resiliently covered wedge can deliver tight shutoff in compatible water and wastewater duties. Check elastomer grade, potable-water approval, temperature, chemical exposure and compression behaviour.

Confirm coating continuity inside the body and around the seat path. Debris accumulation, damaged rubber or unsuitable cleaning chemicals can reduce life.

Where metal seating is considered

Metal seats can serve higher-temperature or more abrasive duties when the design and materials are selected accordingly. Leakage acceptance may differ from resilient designs.

Define seat-ring materials, hardfacing, finish and repair method. Steam or process applications require review of packing, gasket, bolting and body rating together.

Check the flow and solids profile

Record suspended solids, stringy material, scale, sediment and flushing practice. Valve orientation and body cavity geometry affect whether material settles near the seat.

Avoid using an isolation gate valve for continuous throttling unless the design is explicitly intended and qualified for that duty.

Compare operating torque and actuator needs

Seat friction, deposit buildup and differential pressure affect torque. Request torque or thrust values for opening, running and closing under the stated conditions.

Select gearbox or actuator with service factors and output limits that protect the stem and wedge. Excess actuator output can damage internal parts.

Specify acceptance and maintenance

Name the pressure and closure test criteria. Verify coating inspection, wedge material, replaceable parts and recommended spares in the final documents.

During commissioning, flush the line before cycling and confirm travel without forcing the operator. Preserve the valve clean and dry before installation.
