Industrial valve inspection and test plan: ITP guide

An inspection and test plan turns a purchase specification into observable manufacturing controls. A useful valve ITP identifies each operation, governing document, acceptance criterion, record and level of purchaser or third-party involvement.

Start from the approved technical baseline

Build the ITP after the datasheet, standards hierarchy, materials, drawings and deviations are understood. Each inspection step should point to a specific requirement and acceptance criterion.

Avoid a generic factory template that omits project controls. Tailor the plan by valve type, material, pressure class, service qualification and document requirements.

Define clear intervention codes

Use agreed codes for document review, surveillance, witness and hold points. Define what happens when the purchaser waives attendance and which records still require approval.

State notification periods, working hours, location and rescheduling rules. A hold point should stop work until formal release, while a witness point may proceed under the agreed waiver process.

Cover materials and traceability early

Include certificate review, incoming identification, heat or cast transfer, impact and hardness tests where specified, PMI, casting repair and pressure-boundary weld controls. Early checks prevent irreversible work on nonconforming material.

Identify the record produced at each step and its link to valve tags or serial numbers. The ITP should align with the final MRB index.

Control manufacturing and assembly

Add dimensional inspections after critical machining, visual and NDE stages, cleanliness checks, seat contact or lapping controls, bolting, packing installation and actuator mounting. Acceptance should reference drawings and procedures.

For special designs, include fire-safe features, antistatic continuity, cavity relief, stem retention or travel-stop verification as applicable.

Specify pressure and functional tests precisely

List shell, backseat where applicable, high- and low-pressure closure tests, test medium, pressure, duration, orientation and leakage criterion. Include instrument range and calibration requirements.

Functional testing should verify direction, travel, torque or thrust, switches, solenoids, fail action and operating time where relevant. Record actual results instead of a simple pass box.

Finish with coating, marking and dossier release

Define surface preparation, environmental conditions, coating system, dry-film thickness, holiday testing and repair acceptance. Check nameplate, flow arrow, tag, preservation, lifting points and packing.

Final release should confirm closed nonconformities, approved documents, complete test records and packing list. The signed ITP becomes an index of executed quality controls rather than a plan left blank after manufacture.
